THE WEEKEND IS coming up, and that means new movies for you to see.
But which is a must-watch, and are there any you should avoid?
We take a look.
Maggie’s Plan
What we know
The lovely Greta Gerwig plays a young woman who falls in love with a married man – so why, a few years later, does she have to hatch a plan to get him back with his ex-wife?
What the critics say
- “What [director Rebecca Miller] has done is slyly subvert a ubiquitous paradigm. She turns a standard male fantasy inside out. The movie, after all, is not about John’s self-esteem. It’s about Maggie’s plan, which is to say about the comedy of her efforts to manage and anticipate the unruly logic of her own desires and everybody else’s.” - New York Times
- “Maggie’s Plan doesn’t quite gel, but it’s very enjoyable, and it has a solid emotional core.” - Vulture

The Legend of Tarzan
Source: Warner Bros. Pictures/YouTubeWhat we know
The not unattractive Alexandar Skarsgaard and Margot Robbie play a husband and wife – only the husband just happens to be a certain Tarzan. Turns out he was living in London – and is happy out until he is called back to his former home in the jungle.
What the critics say
- “Ultimately, this movie is pointless and utterly unmemorable—it doesn’t even have “well, it’s kind of stupid, but totally Netflixable in a year or so” going for it. All the actors deserve better, and so does the audience.” - The Mary Sue
- “What transpires is an adventure story without the adventure, as Jane — despite vowing she’s not going to be a damsel in distress — is immediately kidnapped by the nefarious Leon Rom (Waltz eerily convincing as a man who’ll do anything for a big pile of cash). So Tarzan and George set off in pursuit. And that’s pretty much it.” - Empire

The Neon Demon

Nicholas Winding Refn (Drive) is back with this sort of kinky horror set in the Los Angeles fashion world. Stars Elle Fanning.
What the critics say
- “ As Jesse’s star rises and those around her begin seeing her as a threat (and become disturbingly obsessed with her), it becomes less and less clear whether Jessie truly is an innocent lamb now being preyed upon by wolves or a wolf dressed in sheep’s clothing…”- Screen Rant
- ““The Neon Demon” is a tease. It starts off as a relatively scannable, user-friendly thriller, but it turns out to be a movie made by a macabre surrealist gross-out prankster.” - Variety
